'IO, A floor standing boom lamp; reconsidering basic interaction process. The boom is spring loaded to enable the lamp to ‘nod’ on and off. A stainless steel cable running over rollers, connects the boom to a switch in the concrete base. The lamp is turned on and off by pushing or pulling the boom arm down lightly.'
 
Brief
‘Design a light source which is influenced by natural human contact or interaction. In which, the main aim is to avoid disrupting a users natural state in the environment the source is placed. An action, movement; or change in the objects state will decide the direction, intensity or state of the light source, using a definite physical movement’
The spun copper shade is large enough to allocate a standard plumen bulb, and casts a warm light atop the area. It can be adjusted by the user to the desired angle on two axes. A fabric cable courses up through the centet of the wooden uprights and along the boom arm.
The wooden upright sections are CNC cut on one side from a standard 25mm thick plank of american oak. The fabric power cable is enclosed in a small channel between them. All required fixing points are machined into the uprights. The sections are fixed together using M4 bolts and wing-nuts, enabling the lamp to be easily assembled by the user after unpacking. The oak is finished in a coat of linseed oil.
The concrete base encloses the on/off switch for the lamp, and receives the stainless steel cable which actuates the switch. The concrete sits over the steel support post atop a rubber mat to protect flooring, and protect itself from shocks and bumps. The power cable leads out of the rear of the base to a standard plug.
 
Below are a few pictures of the first prototype, with parts before assembly, the mandrel for the shade and some rough photos of the finished prototype. Unfortunately, while in storage (and before any amendments or good photos could be taken) , the prototype was carelessly disposed of due to building work, and I have not had the time nor opportunity to build another.
